Our favorite place is just out of Bishop above South Lake to the badly named Brown Lake and Blue Lake. We would rather they were called Reflection Lake and Sky Blue Lake – much better. But no matter the name we can promise you a great hike. The initial climb is steep and demanding but before long it levels off into a high glacial basin surrounded by Whitebark Pines and the silence broken only by falling water and the cry of Clarks Nutcrackers. You deserve to get away from the cares of the city and to rejuvenate your soul in the mountains even if it is only for a day.
Backcountry Day Hike
The Inyo National Forest boasts a total of 1.5 million acres. Surrounded by and including soaring granite towers, glaciers, lush meadows, extravagant wildflowers, wildlife such as bighorn sheep and sage grouse, lakes and creeks teeming with trout, historical relics and artifacts, local culture… it’s incredible here. We think we will be able to find something here to offer you whatever backcountry hiking experience you seek.
