This is a great ride year round. Fall is considered to be the ‘golden’ season for this ride when the Aspens turn. There can be snow and icy patches in mid-winter, but that’s rare.
The trail starts near the junction of the Old Sherwin Grade road and Highway 395 (20 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and 30 miles north of Bishop) and ends at the trailhead in Paradise.
The first two sections are a great family ride for adults and youth aged 12 and older. There are a few bits that require some technical biking skill to negotiate rocks and roots. These can be done easily by dismounting and pushing the bike over the larger rocks. Section 3 is significantly more technical and there are few sections that require a high degree of mountain biking skill or the ability to portage the bike over boulders and up a short talus field. There are exit points after 1 or 2 and we’ll shuttle you to the rendezvous point if you choose to opt out of 3. It’s a beautiful drive too!
